i'm not sure i've mentioned it, but this 3rd round of treatment has been... unique.
i usually look forward to the last week before my next treatment because things somewhat return to normal. or at least closer to normal. that includes the whole food thing.
when both your tastebuds and your smell buds have been assaulted, you look forward to something... anything that might appear on the dinner table that has the remotest glimmer of appeal.
interestingly enough, recovery has looked different after every round.
there have been times when my taste buds were screwy, but things smelled okay. so, after being enticed to the table by something that smelled tasty... one second on my tongue left me excusing myself very quickly. then there have been times when it's just the opposite. i think those were the hardest... when things smelled horrible, but once i forced myself to put them in my mouth... they weren't so bad.
this round has been unpredictable. a little bit of both. smells haven't been so bothersome, but then last night when emms cooked some brocolli. the smell was repulsive, but i pushed through it... hoping the taste would be okay. wrong!
for the most part though... it's not be too bad.
this week my family decided to celebrate my birthday early since i'll be turning "22" next week while enduring my final week of treatment in the hospital. they're so thoughtful!
so beth rolls up her sleeves to make my "once-a-year-and-only-on-my-birthday-because-the-icing-recipe-is-so-frustrating-for-my-wife-to-make" birthday cake. you can read my post from last year to find out more. i love it so much, the other 364 days of the year are spent longing for it. i call them the "off season".
this year it looked great. smelled great too. plop on that vanilla and dig in! i couldn't wait.
now, you have to understand something. this is the cake that i so treasure that once the initial birthday celebration is over, the rest of the family has to "ask" if they may have permission to have a piece of "my" birthday cake. and usually the answer is "no!"
so... you can imagine how bummed i was this year to stick that first bite into my mouth... and find out that even though beth had done a perfect job in making it... well, it just didn't taste right.
through all the life challenges i or my family has endured and are enduring, i've never once asked G*D "why?".
but my birthday cake???
WOW Randy when it comes to cake I completely understand...luv Cyndi

a REALLY nice, loving, understanding wife would make the cake once again when her poor sick, non tasting husband is feeling much better. what do you say bethy??? : )

Hey, that is one of David's favorite cakes too! I unfortunately don't make it very often. He would eat the cake and then eat the frosting like fudge after his piece of cake was gone. He also likes chocolate cake with what he calls white "sticky" frosting (also known by chefs as 7 minute frosting)so that is the one I usually make. Gee, you guys share the same month in birthdays it looks like. Suppose only the August guys like penuche frosting?
